# Global Mental Health Programs Expand to Kenya

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Global Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the Child Mind Institute is expanding its work into Kenya. Peter Raucci, Director of Global Fellowships Strategy, visited the country in May 2025 to explore how the organization can build mental health capacity in regions with limited access to care.

This expansion reflects a growing recognition that child mental health needs extend far beyond wealthy nations. Kenya, like many developing countries, faces severe shortages of trained mental health professionals and resources. By establishing programs there, SNF aims to train local clinicians, strengthen existing mental health systems, and create sustainable solutions rather than importing temporary aid.

The initiative focuses on building local expertise. This approach works better than short-term interventions because it creates lasting change. Trained professionals stay in their communities and continue serving patients long after external support ends.

Global child mental health remains underfunded and understaffed. The World Health Organization estimates that 70 percent of the world's population lacks adequate mental health services. Programs like SNF's Kenya expansion address this gap by investing in people and systems where they're needed most.
