# Apple Is Finally Securing Cross-Platform Text Messages

Apple announced it will support RCS (Rich Communication Services) with end-to-end encryption on iPhones, closing a long-standing security gap in texts between iPhone and Android users.

Previously, when iPhone users messaged Android contacts, those conversations defaulted to SMS, an outdated protocol without encryption. This meant Apple users unknowingly sent unencrypted messages to Android owners. Android phones supported encrypted RCS messaging, but iPhones could not receive that protection. The disparity left hundreds of millions of cross-platform conversations vulnerable.

With iOS 26.5, iPhones now support RCS with end-to-end encryption enabled by default. When an iPhone user texts an Android contact with RCS capability, both devices encrypt the conversation automatically. Neither Apple nor wireless carriers can read the messages.

This change addresses years of criticism from security experts and regulators. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission highlighted the vulnerability in enforcement actions against carriers. Security researchers consistently warned parents and businesses that cross-platform texting exposed sensitive information.

For families with mixed-device households, this matters immediately. If your teenager has an iPhone but friends use Android phones, those group chats now gain real encryption. Business communications between iPhone and Android users also shift from exposed to protected.

The rollout depends on carrier support. Major carriers including T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T support RCS now, though some regional carriers lag behind. Users should check their carrier's website to confirm RCS availability.

Parents should understand that encryption protects privacy but doesn't prevent monitoring. You can still use parental controls or family-sharing features on iPhones and Android devices. Encryption simply ensures that communication is scrambled in transit, protecting against interception.
