Friedlander explains that the visibility amplifies what psychologists call social comparison. When a teen sees dozens of peers celebrating Ivy League acceptances, their own state school admission feels less worthy. When parents see friends' children commit to brand-name universities, doubt creeps in about their own teen's path.
The problem intensifies because these posts show only the highlight reel. Nobody posts about rejection letters or gap years. The curated feed creates a distorted view of what's typical or successful.
