# Negative Online Experiences Hit Harder for Kids With Mental Health Conditions
Children and teens with mental health or neurodevelopmental conditions face higher rates of negative online experiences, and many never report what happens to them, new research shows.
The study, published in JAACAP Open (the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry), examined how often young people encounter harmful content, cyberbullying, or other problems online. Researchers found that youth with existing mental health diagnoses are at elevated risk. The research also uncovered a troubling gap: many teens don't tell adults when something goes wrong online.
This matters because the online world plays an outsized role in adolescent life. Kids spend hours on social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps. For youth already managing anxiety, depression, ADHD, or autism, these spaces can amplify existing struggles. A negative interaction online—whether harassment from peers, exposure to harmful content, or uncomfortable contact from strangers—can hit differently when a teen is already vulnerable.
The reporting gap raises red flags for parents. Some young people worry about losing phone privileges. Others don't recognize what happened as serious enough to mention. Still others feel shame or believe adults won't understand. Teens with mental health conditions may struggle more with these barriers. They might ruminate on negative interactions or lack the emotional bandwidth to advocate for themselves.
The Child Mind Institute, which published this research, recommends parents create space for open conversations about online life without judgment. Ask your teen what happened today online, just as you'd ask about school. Notice changes in mood after screen time. Most important: make clear that reporting bad experiences won't result in punishment.
If your teen uses social media, familiarize yourself with privacy settings and reporting tools on each platform. Instagram, TikTok, and Discord all have built-in features to block users and flag concerning
