# 'Poop Pills' Show Promise for Severe Peanut Allergy, Early Research Shows

Researchers are testing an unusual treatment for severe peanut allergies: capsules containing processed stool from people without peanut allergies. Early findings suggest this approach, sometimes called "poop pills" or fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), may help desensitize allergic children to peanuts.

The treatment works by restoring beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome. Children with severe peanut allergies often have different gut bacterial communities than non-allergic children. By introducing healthy bacterial strains through oral capsules, researchers aim to shift the immune system's response to peanut proteins.

Early trial data shows promise. Children who received FMT capsules alongside gradual peanut exposure (oral immunotherapy) built higher tolerance levels than those receiving immunotherapy alone. Some participants could tolerate larger amounts of peanut protein without allergic reactions, a meaningful step toward reducing life-threatening anaphylaxis risk.

The treatment remains experimental. Researchers continue studying which bacterial strains matter most and how long protection lasts. The capsules are manufactured under strict safety protocols and don't carry the infection risks associated with older fecal transplantation methods.
